Mike Milnarik
Tuba/Workshop Director


Michael S. Milnarik is a member of the Innovata Brass, Brass Sect, Keys & Brass, Dr. Fidgety Dixieland Jazz Band, and the Cosmopolitan Tuba Quartet. He has performed with most of the orchestras in northern New England, the Albany Symphony, the Key West Symphony, as well as with ensembles ranging from new music to Dixieland and jazz, and also as a soloist. He has a Master of Music degree from Boston University and a Bachelor of Music degree from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. Michael is the founder and director of the Northeast Tuba Euphonium Workshop - a summer camp for high school, college and adult age participants, and he runs an online store called TubaStudio.com that carries "Stuff for Tuba Players."

Michael is the tuba and euphonium instructor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Tufts University, Brandeis University, Salem State College and Anna Maria College. Formerly, he taught tuba and euphonium at the University of Southern Maine (8 years) and the Lexington (MA) Public Schools (11 years).

Michael is a Yamaha Performing Artist and Clinician.


Roland Froscher
Euphonium


Born in 1977 in Belp, near Berne. After completing his education as a school teacher at primary level he went on to study euphonium at the Conservatoires of Berne and Lucerne under Roger Bobo. Awarded the Teaching Diploma with Distinction in summer 2002. At the same time he studied “School Music II” at the University of Berne. In summer 2005 he was awarded the Soloists’ Diploma, also with Distinction, having studied under Thomas Rüedi, and was also awarded the Orchestral Direction Diploma, having completed a course of study under Dominique Roggen.
Appearances as guest soloist with various ensembles; symphony orchestras, brass bands and wind orchestras. Concert engagements in several countries in Europe as well as Canada and the USA, where he has also occasionally been engaged as guest lecturer at various universities. Besides his engagements as soloist, Roland Fröscher also enjoys a busy concert schedule as a chamber musician, with the renowned tuba quartet Les Tubadours as well as the concert pianist Jean-Jacques Schmid. He also holds the position of solo euphonium with Brass Band Berner Oberland.

As well as his post as conductor of Brass Band Rapperswil-Wierezwil Roland Fröscher teaches euphonium at the Musikschule Region Gürbetal and is also assistant tutor at the Hochschule der Künste Bern.

Roland Fröscher has been a prize winner at numerous competitions;
– winner of several titles at national youth championship events (SSEW, SSQW),
– winner of the Friedl-Wald competition (2003),
– “Brass player of the year” Hochschule der Künste Bern (2004),
– third prize at the International Euphonium Competition in Lieksa (Finland 2004),
– winner of the Tschumi Prize 2005.

Roland is a York Performing Artist.


Sanae Kanda
Pianist/Composer

Sanae Kanda enjoys a varied career as not only a pianist but also as a composer, arranger and educator. As a pianist, Dr. Kanda has given recitals in the United States and Japan. She has accompanied vocalists, strings, woodwinds and brass in a variety of styles and genres. She is a member of Keys and Brass.

As an educator, Dr. Kanda instructs all levels from beginner through professional and has taught in Japan, as well as in the United States. Currently she is a faculty member at Salem State College, Salem, Massachusetts and Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts.

Rounding out all of these areas, Dr. Kanda is also a composer and arranger. She has written several solo works for tuba and piano, euphonium and piano, trombone quartet, and has recently completed her sixth brass quintet piece. Her first work for brass "Karen" was written for Karen Antonio-Muenzinger and the Innovata Brass. It was released on the first CD recording of the Innovata Brass titled "Brass a la carte" by Stillwater Digital.

A native of Kyoto, Japan, Dr. Kanda studied music in both Japan and the United States. She holds a Masters degree in Piano Performance and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Collaborative Piano Performance from Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts.



Bonnie Anderson
Pianist

Bonnie Anderson was trained at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, The Juilliard School, Michigan State University and Boston University.  Her teachers include Wha Kyung Byun, Russell Sherman, Deborah Moriarty and Benjamin Pasternack.  She has played in master classes for Leon Fleisher, Yo-Yo Ma, Dominique Merlet and Roy Howat.

Ms. Anderson is currently Adjunct Professor of piano and Head of the Keyboard Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.  As a dedicated teacher she particularly enjoys giving master classes around the Boston area.  Ms. Anderson’s recording of piano music by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Ravel and Rorem is available at performances and master classes.  Recent performances include the Kalliroscope Gallery Series with soprano Marguerite Krull, The Kreutzer Sonata at the Merrimack Repertory Theater, the Orchestra of  Indian Hill and the Art of Music Chamber Players.



Mary MacKinnon
Tuba Assistant


Native of Okinawa, Japan, Mary MacKinnon began her tuba studies at the age of eleven. She currently resides in Hartford, Connecticut and enjoys leading an active life as a freelance tubist. Mary is the principal tubist with the Garden State Philharmonic and has played with the National Symphony Orchestra of Dominican Republic, Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra, and New England Philharmonic.

In recent summers, Mary has participated in several music festivals such the Pierre Monteux School Orchestra in Hancock, Maine. She has also participated in the International Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminar at Boston College, where she had the honor of being selected to perform with the Tritantic Brass Ensemble, a group comprised of the Triton Brass Quintet and Atlantic Brass Quintet members. In the summer of 2007 she was accepted into the prestigious international masterclass seminar held at Le Domaine Forget Academy in Quebec, Canada, and worked closely with Lance Nagels, principal tubist of the Quebec City Symphony, and Roger Bobo, international soloist and pedagogue. Over the years, Mary has had the privilege of performing in many masterclasses for musicians such Matthew Murchison, John Manning, and the American Brass Quintet.

Mary began her undergraduate work at the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory where she was the recipient of the Merritt Award and completed her Bachelor of Music in Tuba Performance at The Hartt School with Magna Cum Laude. Her principal teachers include Michael S. Milnarik, Joanna Hersey, and Brian McElhaney.

Most recently Mary has advanced to the semi-final round of the International Tuba Euphonium Association's solo competition, being held in Cincinnati, Ohio in late June of 2008. She has also been offered scholarships for graduate study at Boston University, New England Conservatory, Northwestern University and Indiana University. She will be attending Indiana University in the fall of 2008 under the tuteledge of Dan Perantoni.



Patrick Nyren
Euphonium Assistant


Patrick Nyren is currently a Masters of Music Performance Degree candidate at the University of North Texas, where he studies with Brian Bowman. He received his Bachelors of Music Degree in Music Education at the University of Southern Maine School of Music, where he studied with Michael S. Milnarik. Patrick began his college education at the early age of 16. Although a young student, Patrick had the honor of being principal euphonium of the USM Concert Band during his three and a half years in the ensemble. In 2006 he was selected, by audition, to perform on the School of Music's Honors Solo Recital. He was also the winner of the school's Concerto-Aria Competition, which earned Patrick the honor of soloing with the University's Orchestra.
